He had some unusual false teeth that were carved from wood, rhinoceros ivory, whale bone, and deer antlers. None of his teeth were wooden.

He and his friend/enemy/friend, Thomas Jefferson, both died on July 4th, 1826.
He was one of three presidents not to attend the inauguration of his successor. He was disappointed that he lost the election to Thomas Jefferson, and was grieving the death of his son, Charles.
He was one of two presidents to sign the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson was the other.
He and his son, John Quincy Adams, were one of the two father and son pairs who both served as President. George H. Bush and George W. Bush were the other pair.

He was the first president to be inaugurated in Washington, D.C.
He is credited with several inventions, including the swivel chair, a pedometer, a machine to make fiber from hemp, a letter-copying machine, and the lazy susan.
He was the first President to shake hands instead of bow.
He was able to read Greek, Latin, French and English.
He was one of only two presidents to sign the Declaration of Independence. John Adams was the other.
He was one of three presidents to die on July 4th. John Adams and James Monroe were the others.
Jefferson and Adams both died on the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1826. Adams's dying words were "Thomas Jefferson survives". Jefferson, however, died a few hours earlier.

He was the smallest of all the presidents. He was only 5'4" tall and weighed less than 100 pounds.
He was the first president who had served as a congressman before being elected president.
He was the first president to wear long trousers. All previous presidents wore knee breeches.
He was one of two presidents who signed the Constitution. George Washington was the other.
His wife, Dolley Madison, courageously rescued the famous portrait of George Washington by Gilbert when fleeing from the burning White House in 1812. That portrait is the only remaining possession from the original building.
He was younger than both of his vice presidents, and both of his vice presidents died while they were in office.

He was the first president to have been a U.S. senator.
He was the first president to ride on a steamboat.
In the election of 1820, Monroe received every electoral vote but one. A New Hampshire delegate wanted Washington to be the only president elected unanimously.
He is best known for the "Monroe Doctrine" of 1816. In essence, the Monroe Doctrine stated that the United States would not interfere in European wars or internal affairs, and expected Europe to reciprocate.
His inauguration in 1817 was the first to be held outdoors.

He annually read the Bible from front to cover.
He was the first president married abroad. His wife, Louisa Catherine Johnson, was the only foreign first lady.
He was the son of John Adams, one of two father and son "sets" to be elected president. The other was George H. Bush and George W. Bush.
He argued before the Supreme Court on behalf of slaves from the ship Amistad who mutinied during their journey from Africa.

He was the only president to have been a prisoner of war. At thirteen, he joined the South Carolina militia to fight in the Revolutionary War. After his capture, he was ordered to clean the boots of a British officer. When Jackson refused, the officer drew his sword and slashed Jackson across the forehead, leaving a scar.

Some Trivia


He was the first president who was born a U.S. citizen.
He made three unsuccessful bids for re-election.
His autobiography does not mention his wife even once.
He was known as the "Little Magician" and the "Red Fox of Kinderhook" because of his reputed cunning and skill as a politician.
The term "O.K." was popularized because of Van Buren. Van Buren was from Kinderhook, New York, sometimes referred to as Old Kinderhook in speeches and print. O.K. Clubs soon formed to support Van Buren's campaign. "O.K." later came to mean all right.

He was the first President to study medicine.
He was the first president to receive over one million popular votes.
He delivered the longest inaugural address on March 4, 1841. It was an extremely cold day and Harrison did not wear a hat during the 105 minute speech. He contracted pneumonia and died in the White House one month later.
He was the first president to die in office, about 32 days after he was elected.
In 1840, his supporters pushed a huge paper ball covered with campaign slogans from city to city. They added a phrase to the language: "Keep the ball rolling."
