Yes/no questions

A statement is turned into a question by simply adding the question word
क्या kya at the beginning of the sentence;क्या kya isn't translatable here: it just turns what follows into a question. There's no change in the word order: just add क्या to make a question.

क्या मैं अध्यापक हूँ ?
kya main adhyipak hun? Am I a teacher?
क्या गीता डाक्टर है  ?
kya Gita daktar hai? Is Geeta a doctor?
क्या सीता नर्स है  ?
kya sita nars hai?  Is Sita a nurse?

Because these questions can all be answered either जी हाँ  ji han yes, or जी नहीं ji nahin no,
we'll call them 'yes' questions. Here are two more, with their answers:
क्या राजू ठीक हैं ?
kya Raju thik hin? Is Raju OK?

जी हाँ  ,राजू ठीक है  .
ji han, Raju thik hai. Yes, Raju is OK.
क्या गीता बिनर hai ?
kya Gita bimar hai? Is Geeta ill?
जी नहीं ,गीता बिनर नहीं है .
ji nahin, Gita bimar nahin hai. No, Geeta isn't ill.

In order to begin real conversations, we need to add the word अप ap'you'
and the verb हैं hain 'are' अप हैं  ap hain 'you are'. Notice the difference between है hai 'is'  and  हैं hain 'are': the second is nasalized (a nasal sound is produced when some of the breath comes through the nose rather than through the mouth).

Now we're really talking:
क्या अप गीता हैं ?
kya ap Gita hain? Are you Geeta?
जी हाँ  ,मैं गीता हूँ .
ji han, main Gita hun. Yes, I am Geeta.
क्या अप डाक्टर हैं ?
kya ap  daktar  hain? Are you a doctor?

क्या मैं बीमार हूँ ?
kya main bimar hun? Am I ill?
जी नहीं ,अप बीमार नहीं हैं .
ji nahin, ap bimar nahin hai. No, you're not ill.
क्या मैं ठीक हूँ ?
kya main thik hun? Am I all right?
जी हाँ बिकुल थीं हैं !
ji han, ap bilkul thik hain Yes, you're quite all right!
