LESSON 1 DO YOU LIKE TO DANCE, SUSAN?
Linda: Good afternoon. We have a big problem. Our ratings are down. We need new ideas. We need good stories.
Carol: What's the problem? We always report good stories.
John: No. Not always.
Carol: Well, usually.
Linda: OK, Carol. Usually. But we sometimes look bad.
Susan: When?
John: How?
Linda: The problem is interviews. We always interview people on Thursday and Friday. And that's boring.
Carol: I have an idea. How about music?
Linda: OK. What's the story?
Carol: There's a rock concert on Saturday.
Linda: No. Our viewers don't like rock music.
Carol: Do you like fashion shows?
Linda: No, I don't. But our viewers like fashion. Women like fashion.
John: We need something important. People like important news, Linda.
Linda: People like new ideas, John. Jake?
Jake: I have an idea. The answer is weekends. What do people do on the weekend?
Linda: Hmm, a weekend report? That's interesting. People often think about the weekend on Thursday and Friday.
Susan: I like it.
Linda: But we need action.
Jake: Right. I have some ideas here. Look at these pictures.
Susan: You sure like sports!
Jake: Yes, I do. I like to play golf. I like to play tennis.
Linda: That's not a bad idea.
Jake: I like to skate. I like to run. Don't I look great?
John: Nice legs. I like your shorts, Jake.
Jake: How about Saturday night? What do people usually do on Saturday night?
I like to dance. Do you like to dance, Susan?
Susan: No, I don't. I never dance.  I usually stay home on Saturday night.
Jake: I always go out.
Linda: I don't like the Saturday night idea.
Susan: Do you like sports?
Linda: Yes. I like that idea.  People like to watch sports, especially men.
On Friday we do a weekend report on sports.
Jake: A great idea. "The Weekend Report with Jake Seltzer".
Linda: No, I want all of you to work on this. It's "The Weekend Report" with the WEFL news team.
Carol: What about Thursdays?
Linda: On Thursday we do fashion. I want some beautiful dresses. Maybe some hats.
Susan: What else?
Linda: I like stories about people. I like stories with action. I like good pictures.
Jake: Are we in the stories?
Linda: Sometimes. We need good stories, and we need them now!

LESSON 2 CAN YOU SAIL?

John: What are these?
Susan: They're my ideas for the weekend report.
John: What's this?
Susan: A horse.
John: I know that. Can you ride a horse?
Susan: Well, yeah.
John: What?
Susan: Yes, I can ride a horse. Can you?
John: No, I can't ride very well.
Susan: Can Jake ride?
John: Yes, he can. He looks great in riding clothes.
Susan: What a shame!
John: Why?
Susan: I want to do stories without Jake. Is there anything wrong with that?
John: No.
Susan: I don't want to stay at WEFL forever.
John: I understand.
Susan: I need to do stories alone.
John: Me too.
Susan: Jake always looks great inside the studio.
John: But outside the studio, he isn't good with real people.
Susan: Exactly. I'm usually good outside the studio with real people.
John: You're right.
Susan: What's a good weekend report?
John: What can you do?
Susan: I can sing. (SINGING) Oh, my darling, Oh, my darling, Oh. . .
John: Can you water -ski?
Susan: No, I can't.
John: Can you swim?
Susan: Yes. I'm a good swimmer.
John: It's not a very good sport for television. Can you sail?
Susan: Yes. Yes, I can sail very well!
John: Maybe you can do a weekend report about sailing.
There's a race next weekend. It's a good news story and a good weekend report.
Susan: That's a good idea. Can you sail?
John: No, I can't.
Susan: Can Jake sail?
John: Susan, forget Jake.
Susan: I can't.
Voice: OK, Jake. Take one.
Jake: Welcome to "The Weekend Report." I'm Jake Seltzer.
Every kid in America can play baseball. They start here.
Jake: And boy, they can hit that ball!

Mike: Oh.
Linda: We have a rehearsal today at 3: 00 Susan, Jake, and John need their scripts.
Jake, is that the script for the show on Tuesday?
Jake: No, it's my idea for the weekend report. Take a look.
Linda: I don't like the story. Not baseball again.
Susan: Hello, Linda. This is an idea for the weekend report.
Jake: I have a story on baseball. Linda doesn't like it.
Susan: Really? The Stamford team is in first place.
Jake: I can practice with them.
Linda: OK. Why don't you take Susan with you?
Jake: I want to do this alone. The weekend report is my idea. Sorry, Susan, but I don't need help.
Linda: Listen, we all work together here. It isn't Susan's show. It isn't yours how.
It's our show. Yo u look good together.
Susan: I'm very busy right now, Linda.
Jake: And I need to do the story this weekend.
Linda: OK, Jake, you can do it alone this time, but next time do it with Susan.
Susan: Linda, read my scripts first please.
Linda: I like to read scripts on weekends.
Susan: Here it is.
Mike: I told you so. . . What's the matter, Linda?
Linda: Can they work together, Mike?
Mike: Yes, they can work together very well. Don't worry.
Linda: I need them.
Mike: Come on. I have a new videotape. Do you want to see it?
Linda: Wow!That's great.
Mike: Neat, huh?
Linda: Really? Can we use the pictures?
Mike: Yes. They're my pictures.
Linda: Oh.
Mike: Who does the story?
Linda: Who can kayak?
Mike: John can.
Linda: No, he can't.
Mike: Yes, he can. He can kayak very well.

LESSON 4 WHY DO YOU HAVE A HEADACHE?
John: You look terrible! What's wrong?
Susan: I have a headache.
John: I'm sorry to hear that. Do you want some aspirin?
Susan: OK. Can you get two aspirin for me?
John: Yes, and how about some water?
Susan: Thanks.
John: Why do you have a headache?
Susan: Because I have to work with Jake! Linda thinks we look good together.
John: What about the sailboat race?
Susan: It's a great idea. I hope Linda likes it.
John: Here's your aspirin and your water.
Susan: Thank you. Enough about me. How are you?
John: I'm great. I'm happy.
Susan: Why? Because you're with me?
John: Yes.
Susan: And?
John: I have a new job offer.
Susan: What? Where is the job?
John: In Denver. KDEN, Denver.
Susan: Is it a good job?
John: I don't know. They need a new host.
Susan: I don't want to leave?
John: I don't want to leave you, but I don't like it here.
Susan: Why not?
John: Because I don't like Jake, I don't like stories about weekends, I want to do real news.
Susan: Does Denver have all that?
John: Maybe.
Susan: Oh. Now I really have a headache.
Jake: Who's this, Rita?
Rita: My friend Chris.
Jake: She's pretty. She has brown eyes and blond hair?
Rita: Yes.
Jake: I like that. How tall is she?
Rita: She's tall--about five eight.
Jake: You sound awful. What's the matter?
Rita: I have a cold. My whole body aches.
Jake: That's too bad. I can rub your back.
Rita: Thanks. That helps.
Jake: So your friend . . . blond hair. She's pretty. What does she do?
Rita: She teaches sailing.
Jake: I can't go near boats. I get seasick.
Rita: What happens?
Jake: I get dizzy. . . So, what about Susan?
Rita: She likes John. I think it's serious.
Jake: No, I mean about the weekend report. She has an idea. What is it?
Rita: I don't know. What's your idea?
Jake: Baseball. It's a good story.
Rita: Thank you for the back rub.
Jake: Any time. See ya.
Susan: Hi, Rita. Who's that?
Rita: My friend Chris.
Susan: She's pretty.
Rita: I want to introduce her to Jake.
Rita: He doesn't want to meet her.
Susan: Why not?
Rita: Because she's a sailing teacher.
Susan: So?
Rita: Jake gets seasick on boats.
Susan: Really: That's very funny.
Rita: Why?
Susan: Because my weekend report is on sailing.
Rita: Oh, I love it. That is funny!

Linda: The race is this weekend, isn't it?
Susan: Yes, it is. There are two on Saturday and one on Sunday afternoon.
Linda: Thank you, Susan.
Susan: That's it? Can I do the story?
Linda: Yes. Good job. But I want you to do it with Jake.
Susan: Linda, he can't sail.

Susan: Can you wear purple with black?
Donna: Of course you can. It's wonderful with black.
Susan: What are we looking at now, Donna?
Donna: Evening wear. This is Karen. She's wearing a short silk dress. It's elegant, isn't it?
Susan: It's purple too.
Donna: Right. It's the "in" color.
Susan: Uh-huh.
Donna: Look at this beautiful dress. It's very elegant.
Susan: But don't you have to be tall and thin to wear that dress?
Donna: No. Karen is five six, and she looks wonderful, doesn't she?
Susan: Yes, she does. Donna, what is the one important thing to buy this season?
Donna: A short purple skirt, of course.

Linda: He has to learn to sail. You and Jake have to work together.
Susan: Why?
Linda: Because you look good together.
Susan: I can't work with Jake.
Linda: Why not?
Susan: Because Jake always wants to be the star.
Linda: You and Jake have to work together.
Susan: Before you get mad, listen.
Linda: I'm listening.
Susan: I'm working with Jake. It's hard. He's always the star. He always has to be first. And he's always late.
Linda: I know, Susan.
