Lord mayor aims to promote City as global training centre
London's new lord mayor is launching a campaign to promote the City as a centre for training business and financial professionals from around the world.
John Stuttard told last night's lord mayor's banquet in Guildhall he had chosen "City of London - City of Learning" as the theme of his mayoralty.

Today he will unveil plans to use his year in office to promote the higher education institutions and professional bodies whose expertise has contributed to making London the world's leading financial centre.
The campaign aims to bring together more than 30 professional bodies, business schools and training organisations in a drive to raise the number of people studying for British qualifications in the UK and in their home countries.
"People who want to succeed in financial and business disciplines increasingly recognise the value of British qualifications," said Mr Stuttard. "We represent the gold standard in the UK, but there is no co-ordinated campaign to promote them. I can join them all up and be champion for a year."
A survey by the City of London Corporation, the Square Mile's local authority, found the availability of highly skilled staff rated by global financial institutions as the most important reason for locating in London.
Many in the City arrived in Britain to complete their education and training and now work for London-based companies.
But the provision of qualifications in financial services such as accountancy, banking, financial trading, insurance and dispute resolution has also become a growing export market, with hundreds of thousands studying for them worldwide.
The financial and professional service institutions have more than 800,000 members, of whom 160,000 live overseas. The six accountancy bodies alone have more than 330,000 members, one-quarter of them abroad. But more than half the 330,000 students working towards their qualifications are based overseas.
One-quarter of the 120,000 members of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors live abroad, as do 40 per cent of their 100,000 students.
The Securities and Investment Institute provides qualifications in administration, trading, dealing and investment management that attract more than 34,000 examination entries a year in more than 30 countries.
