Characters in the Combining Diacritical Marks section of the Unicode Standard
On our keyboard charts (for Windows or Macintosh) these diacritics are shown with a dotted circle, showing their relationship to the base character. You simply type the base character then the diacritics you wish to add.

Typing Diacritical Marks
It is easy to add diacritical marks. Just type the base letter followed by the diacritics. For example:

With some combinations it is possible to add up to five diacritical marks to a base letter:

It is easy to produce many features, such as continuous overlines and underlines:

Font Samples
AfroRoman in Unicode is available in five typestyles (Times-, Helvetica-, Garamond-, Palatino-, and Zapf Chancery-styles). Below are samples in each typestyle demonstrating many of the special characters in the fonts that are needed to type African languages. There also are links to popup windows showing samples of the Igbo, Twi, Ewe, Yoruba, Lingala, and Ateso languages, followed by large samples that will show all of the accented character combinations supported by these fonts, including the accented vowels and consonants not shown below. In addition, you will see samples of the bold, italic, and bold-italic weights of the fonts (except AfroRomanChanU, which is plain only). These links will each open in a new (popup) browser window, because the samples are very large and will open slowly over a dial-up connection. Please be sure to look at the additional samples of these beautiful and unique fonts.

Fonts and their use: There are two typestyles in the LaserAmharic in Unicode product.
The EthiopicU typestyle is a modern form commonly used today.
The AmharicU typestyle was commonly used in ancient texts.
This extract from Matthew 5 shows how this typestyle was actually used. Notice it has a wide Ethiopic space with dots and the other punctuation is narrow.
The same ancient text typed with the EthiopicU typestyle:
As described above, in order to support both ancient and modern Ethiopic texts plus English, we provide the narrow (English-sized) blank space, the wide (Ethiopic-sized) blank wordspace (which is not yet in the Unicode standard), and the wide space with dots (which is part of the Unicode standard). We also provide the narrow Ethiopic punctuation commonly used today and the wide punctuation commonly used in ancient texts (as seen above). To do this we have created three versions of each typestyle. All six fonts are included in the product with instructions to help you decide which font to use for your projects. Following are descriptions of the three versions of the fonts.
The EthiopicLSU and corresponding AmharicLSU typestyles have a wide Ethiopic space with dots. All other Ethiopic punctuation is wide.
EthiopicLSU
AmharicLSU
EthiopicLSspU
AmharicLSspU
EthiopicOnlyU
AmharicOnlyU
The EthiopicLSspU and corresponding AmharicLSspU typestyles have a wide blank Ethiopic space. All other Ethiopic punctuation is narrow.
The EthiopicOnlyU and corresponding AmharicOnlyU typestyles have a wide Ethiopic space with dots, and all other punctuation is narrow. The distinctive feature of these two -OnlyU fonts is that they also include a wide Ethiopic blank space that allows Ethiopic text typed with these two fonts to be fully justified, as shown here.

Akkadian

LaserAkkadian Samples
Text may be typed with black (solid) wedges or with open (outline) wedges. The two sets of fonts are interchangeable. Here we see samples of Akkadian text from Hammurabi's Law Code using both styles of font:

Law 1 from Hammurabi's Law Code:

The fonts may be scaled to any size. Here is the same Law 1 in a much larger point size.
Law 1:

Law 2 from Hammurabi's Law Code:

The fonts include seven erasure symbols (faded blocks). In addition to the full erasure symbol there are six symbols designating erasure of various portions of signs. Type the front erasures before the Akkadian sign and the rear erasures after the sign. Notice how the reconstructed portions of the erasures are legible underneath the erasure symbol. The full erasure symbol at the bottom is not an overstrike and no symbol shows through it. Repeat the full erasure symbol for longer erasures.

The fonts include standard Akkadian transliteration symbols and hanging brackets.

The included TranslitToGlyphs macro will convert transliterated Akkadian text to Akkadian signs (in Microsoft Word). If you have a section of transliterated text the LaserAkkadian User's Manual guides you through the conversion process.

The fonts also include two over-sized Akkadian cross-shaped signs, shown here in the AkkadianBlackE font, at various point sizes.
Here are the same cross-shaped signs in the AkkadianLSE (open) font.
