Morse Code Frequently Asked Questions
These answers apply to the original Java Morse code Translator. New answers for the new translator are on the way...

Can I see the source code?
The Java Morse code translator has source code released under the Gnu General Public License. The code for the CGI script is not available.
How can I run the Morse code translator on my own machine without being online?
Probably! If you can run the translator online then you should be able to. You need to download three files: the translator, the regexp library and a web page to run it from. Use your web browser to save these files into a directory (right click and use "Save link as..." or "Save target as...") then point your browser at the offlinetrans.html page you've just downloaded (use the File menu to "Open..." or "Open file..."). With any luck you should see the translator.
How can I put the Morse code translator on my own web site?
Putting the three files listed in the previous answer into a directory on your web site should do it. You can then change the HTML in the offlinetrans.html file to suit your purpose. If you do use it on your web site then it would be polite to put a link back to my site (http://scphillips.com). As the source code for the translator is available you can also take the source code and change the way the program works or looks. If you do this, you must follow the terms and conditions of the GNU General Public License.
How can I save the sound files on my computer to play again later?
This depends on your computer and on whether you use the Java or CGI translator. With the Java translator you can save the sound to a file in a round-about way:
1.Download Audacity - a free sound file editor.
2.Run Audacity.
3.In Audacity, select "Wave Out Mix" in the drop-down input source selection box.
and press "Play".
4.In the Morse translator, enter the text or Morse.
5.In Audacity, press the record button.
6.In the Morse translator, press "Play".
Audacity will then record the sound coming out of the computer. Press the stop button in Audacity when the Morse has finished. You can then edit the sound and save it in a variety of formats.
With the CGI translator when you receive the sound file your computer will place it in a temporary directory and will probably launch a sound file player (such as Windows Media Player) to play the sound. You may be able to save the file from the sound player application or you may be able to find the file in a temporary directory and copy it from there. Alternatively you could alter the preferences on your web browser to save .wav files to disk instead of launching a player. Obviously none of these solutions is ideal and I am aware that an extra option in both translators would be preferable.
How long have you been interested in ham radio?
Don't take this the wrong way, but I have no interest in ham radio as such and I do not even know Morse code myself!
I love your web site and all this morse code stuff. Can I give you lots of money?
Unfortunately this isn't really a frequently asked question! If you would really like to show your appreciation then send a postcard to my address!

Salsa Rhythm
Introduction
Salsa music has a complex rhythm. Understanding the rhythm can help you to find the 1 beat or find the 2 beat so that you know when to start dancing. On this page I introduce the most important salsa percussion instruments and explain their common rhythms. You can listen to each instrument as you read about it or combine them in the interactive rhythm player at the end. Each rhythm is "counted in" by six beats to give you the speed.
Not necessarily all these instruments will be used in salsa music and even when they are, the rhythm that each instrument plays can vary throughout the music - some coming in during the chorus and others in the verse. Sometimes an instrument will play a variation on the basic rhythm presented here.
Clave
Clave (pronounced "clah-vay") is both a rhythm and an instrument. The "son clave" rhythm is the fundamental rhythm in salsa music and has two main variations: the "3-2 clave" shown below, and the "2-3 clave" which has the two bars in the reverse order. The choice of 2-3 or 3-2 depends on the music's melody. It may start or stop during the music but will not change from one form to the other in a single piece. The "3-2" variation is used in the player below.

Conga
The conga is a tall drum that is played with both hands. It may be played as part of a set of congas of different sizes. There is a good YouTube video by Nate Torres explaining the basic salsa conga rhythm known as the "tumbaó". It is quite complex, but the loudest notes are the ones to watch for: the "boom-boom" open tones that occur on beats 4 and 4½ and again on beats 8 and 8½, and the "slap" on beats 2 and 6. This is the "Conga (basic)" rhythm in the player below.
A minor variation on the complex rhythm shown in the video can also be played below. The notation used is pairs of letters: "L" or "R" for left or right hand and then "H" for heel, "T" for toe or tip, "S" for slap and "O" for open.

-->Cow Bell
The cow bell (or "campana" or "bongo bell") is played by the bongo player during the louder parts of salsa music (the "montuno" or "mambo" sections). In the player below there is a basic rhythm which plays on just beats 1, 3, 5 and 7. These are the "strong" or "fundamental" beats of salsa. A more complex rhythm is also included in the player which adds some extra beats to the basic rhythm. The extra beats are different in the first and second bars and so give a clue about which bar is playing even when the clave has stopped.

Timbale
In the verses and softer sections of the music a rhythm is often played with a drum stick on the side of a drum such as the timbale or tom. This rhythm is called the "cáscara" rhythm (meaning "shell" as it is played on the shell of the timbale).

Güiro
This is the one that makes that scraping sound. Like the cow bell, the güiro accents the 1, 3, 5 and 7 fundamental beats of salsa with long notes. Between these long notes it plays two short notes.

Player
In this rhythm player you can listen to the main salsa percussion instruments together or one by one by clicking on the instument names to turn them off and on. I've put a dark green square in the beats where an instrument plays loudly and a light green square in the beats where it plays softly. The lines in grey are not playing.
I've also shown the men's steps for three different styles of salsa: "LA", "New York" and "Palladium". The notation I have used is pairs of letters: first "L" or "R" for left or right foot, then "F", "S" or "B" for forward, on the spot or backward. I have also put a slash ("/") for when the break is, i.e when you change direction. For LA and Palladium start with your right foot in front of your left, but for New York style start with your left foot in front. There's no way you can learn to dance salsa from reading about it, but the steps are there to let you see how the steps and the percussion instruments interact.

Morse Code Music
- connecting rhythm and language with Morse Code -
Welcome to my Morse Code Music page!  It includes: 1) an explanation on how to translate Morse Code into music; 2) an online Morse Code Music generator you can play right now on your computer; and 3) multimedia activities that integrate Morse Code with other areas of the curriculum!  So, take a couple of minutes and learn more about Morse Code and the wonderful connections we can make between language and music.
Translating Morse Code into Music
With International Morse Code, each letter of the alphabet is represented by short and long sounds called dots and dashes.
Each dot, or short sound, will be played as an eighth note.

Each dash, or long sound, will be played as a quarter note. - dash long sound quarter note
Between each letter, there will be an eighth rest.

Translation
In the beginning God created heaven and earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep water. The spirit of God was hovering over the water. Then God said, "Let there be light!" So there was light. God saw the light was good. So God separated the light from the darkness. God named the light "day", and the darkness he named "night". There was evening, then morning, the first day.
(Genesis 1: 1-5)
