Europe Dominates M.B.A. Survey
Nearly two years after Laura D'Andrea Tyson took over as dean, London Business School has received the highest marks in a new ranking of business schools based on the views of international recruiters.
LBS, the graduate business school at the University of London, was rated the top business school by 438 international -- or largely non-U.S. -- recruiters who participated in the third annual Wall Street Journal/Harris Interactive survey of corporate recruiters. Overall, European business schools dominated the top 10. Three Spanish and two French schools filled the ranks after LBS, reflecting the growing popularity of graduate-level business degrees in the European Union. Two Mexican and two Canadian schools rounded out the list.
The international recruiters' ranking, appearing for the first time this year, is separate from the Journal's overall top-50 ranking, which includes the views of all 2,191 recruiters participating in the survey, most of them in the U.S. (See related article.) A recruiter is considered "international" if his or her recruiting efforts are largely directed outside the U.S. (See methodology.)
The findings in the international-recruiters' rankings are striking. Even though the M.B.A. is an American invention with a long track record, not a single U.S. business school appears in the top 10.
Clearly, European business schools can hold their own against U.S. schools. "The ability to experience business in many different cultures within such a short distance is a big and growing appeal" of M.B.A. programs in Europe, says William Parrott, director of member services and international programs at the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education, an accrediting organization in Overland Park, Kansas. "Business programs in Europe are also attractive because of all the business and trade issues, the opportunities surrounding the European Union."
In other findings, French rivals Insead and the HEC School of Management both made it into the top 10, placing eighth and ninth, respectively, in the rankings by international recruiters. However, if all 2,191 recruiters are included, HEC -- a newcomer to the global-50 rankings this year -- actually topped the better-known Insead, with HEC taking the No. 48 spot, and Insead dropping out of the top 50 after being No. 37 last year.
In grabbing the No. 1 spot among international recruiters, LBS benefited from its reputation of having a strong global perspective and from its students' focus on teamwork and personal ethics.
LBS "is unique in its international focus," says Marco Arosti, a banking associate at J.P. Morgan Chase in London. "Top-tier American schools are too focused on the U.S., both considering their curriculum and alumni-network distribution. Since January 2002, I noticed a much stronger emphasis [at LBS] on high-profile marketing and much more quality in the fund-raising effort."
Indeed, since joining LBS during January 2002, Ms. Tyson has worked to improve the school's strategy as well as organize its first major fund-raising drive. Ms. Tyson, who served as national economic adviser during the Clinton administration, also is a former dean of the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley.
"She's able to advance the school in ways that haven't been done before," says Dina Consolini, director of special projects in the dean's office, pointing to Ms. Tyson's experience in government and academia. For one thing, Ms. Consolini notes, "she cares very much about global learning, and is building on our global relationships with other schools and with the corporate world."
Founded in 1965, LBS is among the youngest of the top business schools in Europe. It also is among the most international. More than 80% of graduates come from outside the U.K. and 70% of its faculty are from countries other than Britain.
LBS this year ranked eighth world-wide for excellence in international business in the Wall Street Journal/Harris Interactive survey.
Studies in international economics are part of the school's required course offerings. Each year, approximately 35% of second-year M.B.A. students spend a term overseas at one of more than 30 business schools with which LBS offers exchange programs. And a shadowing project, whereby first-year students silently observe a manager on the job for a week, has become another way for many students to gain experience abroad. About a third of shadowing projects are done abroad, according to Simon Buller, M.B.A. program manager.
In Spain, three business schools -- Madrid's Instituto de Empresa (IE), the University of Navarra's International Graduate School of Management (IESE), and Barcelona's Escuela Superior de Administracion y Direccion de Empresas (Esade) -- ranked in the top five, placing third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Although IE ranked below London among international recruiters, it actually topped London in the global-50 survey, which reflects the views of all recruiters participating in the Journal survey.
With 24% of international respondents residing in Spain, geographic proximity may have played at least a partial role in the survey's results. However, recruiters outside Spain also noted the programs' focus on practical skills and students' ability to adapt to different jobs as distinguishing characteristics.
IESE, for instance, "provides a very balanced, complete program," says Kristoff Puelinckx, a European partner at Diamondcluster International, a management-consulting firm with headquarters in Chicago. This gives the school's alumni "a more holistic view on business than alumni from some other schools." IESE's students also get a strong global perspective on business, he adds, noting that "it makes it very easy for us to later put them to work in any part of the world, including Asia or Latin America."
Madrid's IE ranked seventh among business schools world-wide selected for excellence in entrepreneurship. At least, in part, this is due to the school's history, says director of communications Ulla Maculan. "Thirty years ago, two entrepreneurs founded the school. They took it as their obligation to focus on entrepreneurship, and this has been a strong part of our curriculum ever since," Ms. Maculan says. Today, more than 15% of IE's graduates start their own businesses after completing the program.
As for Esade, "I've always been impressed by the positive attitude of Esade graduates and their ability to adapt to different situations and adopt different perspectives," says Mireia Gimeno, director of human-resources operations at Caprabo SA, a Barcelona-based distribution company.
In France, HEC School of Management scored high enough for the first time to be included in the top-50 global rankings. Recruiters gave HEC strong ratings for its curriculum, international perspective, and students' general-management point-of-view, analytical and problem-solving skills.
HEC's lowest scores were for students' awareness of corporate-citizenship issues, the retention rate of past hires, and the career-placement office at the school.
Philippe Charrier, general manager of the French operations of Procter & Gamble Co., says flatly: "We are getting great people from that school." He feels they have "a high academic level, together with a great business sense. They are capable of thinking in big-picture terms, while knowing how to sort out complex and technical issues." Mr. Charrier goes so far as to say that HEC "is clearly the leading business school in France and the most competitive one."
Of course, HEC's French counterpart Insead would take issue with that. The Fontainebleau-based school made it into the top 10 of international recruiters, at No. 8. And in a ranking by all 2,191 recruiters participating in this year's survey, Insead ranked No. 2 among business schools that recruiters cited for excellence in international business.
Outside of Europe, Instituto Tecnologico y Estudios Superiores de Monterrey took second place in the international-recruiter rankings. The school, based in Monterrey, Mexico, has a much-wider reach through branch campuses and exchange programs with business schools throughout the Americas, Asia and Europe.
Monterrey Tech's M.B.A. program has steadily increased its international profile in recent years. During 1998, it received accreditation from AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) International in St. Louis. And about 85% of full-time students come from countries other than Mexico. More than half of students take jobs in the industrial sector upon graduating.
Another Mexican program, Instituto Panamericano de Alta Direccion de Empresa (Ipade), ranked sixth in the international recruiters' survey. Since its inception during 1967, Ipade has encouraged and expanded its international-cooperation agreements with Spain's University of Navarra (fourth place in the international-recruiters' ranking) and the Harvard Business School of the U.S. Ipade was credited for faculty expertise and students' communication and interpersonal skills.
About 28% of graduates enter financial services or investment banking; other sectors are fairly equally represented.
The Schulich School of Business at York University and the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario -- two Canadian institutions known for their general-management curriculum and practical focus on team-building -- placed seventh and 10th, respectively.
(Universit of California at Berkeley)哈斯商学院(Haas School of Business)院长。
(The Association To Advance Collegiate Schools of Business 简称AACSB)的认证。
(Schulich School of Business at York University)和西安大略大学毅伟管理学院(Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario)因综合管理课程和对团队建设的重视,分别获得第七和第十名。
