BusinessWeek will fold overseas

BusinessWeek is to close its European and Asian print editions, prompting layoffs of an unspecified number of staff, a person familiar with the matter said.

The magazine, published by McGraw-Hill Cos., will replace the overseas print editions with special European and Asian online editions, the person said.

At the same time, BusinessWeek will begin distributing its U.S. edition as a global print edition in Europe and Asia.

It is unclear when the decision will take effect.

The decision reflects the difficult economics of distributing print editions overseas, the person said.

It also comes at a time many business publishers are grappling with a tough advertising environment. Kimberley Quinn, director of communications for BusinessWeek, declined to comment.

BusinessWeek has published the European and Asian editions since 1996.

The magazine will continue to distribute local language print editions though partnerships with local publishers in China, Poland, Russia and Turkey among other countries.
