Indian message for King Gyanendra as Nepal burns

Kathmandu: Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran and Prime Minister's special envoy Karan Sigh reached Nepal on Wednesday amid mounting unrest and reports that thousands of agitators plan to blocakde the royal palace on Thursday.

The two envoys are likely to meet King Gyanendra and leaders of the seven-party alliance, which leads the 14-day democracy agitation in the country.

Saran, who flew to Kathmandu from Bhutan, met the Chief of Royal Nepal Army Pyarjung Thapa and Prabhakar Shamsher Rana, a close aide of Gyanendra.

Karan has perhaps been chosen for the job because his wife is related to the Nepal royal family. Yasho Rajya Lakshmi is the granddaughter of General Mohan Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana, the last Rana Prime Minister of Nepal.

The seven-party alliance has asked people to blockade the Narayanhiti Palace on Thursday, and there are rumours that the government may declare emergency to stop that.

Karan warned on Tuesday that civil unrest against the monarchy was "spinning out of control" in the Himalayan nation.

"We do not want to interfere in the internal affairs of any other country but the situation in Nepal seems to be spinning out of control. The Prime Minister has asked me to go to Nepal to take a message to the king and also make a general assessment of the situation," he said.
