China Yuan Up Late After Dollar Slips Against Yen

However, traders said they expect the relative lull in activity during the past few sessions to give way to a faster pace of yuan appreciation next week. On the over-the-counter market, the dollar was at CNY7.8720 around 0730 GMT, down from Thursday's close of CNY7.8735. It traded between CNY7.8732 and CNY7.8708, its lowest point since last year's revaluation. The U.S. dollar was at CNY7.8712 at 0730 GMT on the automatic price-matching system, down from Thursday's close of CNY7.8740. It traded in a range of CNY7.8718 to CNY7.8710. Dealers said the yuan's modest gains were due to the dollar's drop against the Japanese yen during Asian trade. The dollar was at Y117.06 around 0730 GMT, down from Y117.17 when China's currency market closed Thursday. A Guangzhou-based dealer at a foreign bank said he thought the dollar might fall below CNY7.8600 next week. 'I think we can expect the dollar-yuan to drop more sharply next week. After pausing for the last few sessions, we could see the same sort of faster appreciation as last week,' he said. The dollar has traded between CNY7.8700 and CNY7.8800 since Tuesday. Before then, the dollar dropped CNY0.0282 in three sessions. Taking a longer view, UBS said it expected the recent lull to be short-lived. 'We think this consolidation is likely to be temporary with our forecast of 7.8200 by the year end still within reach,' the bank said in a research note. Offshore, one-year dollar-yuan nondeliverable forwards were at 7.6045/7.6145 late Friday, down from 7.6230/7.6260 late Thursday afternoon.
