China Hits Trillion-Dollar Mark In Its Foreign-Exchange Reserves
BEIJING -- China's foreign-exchange reserves have reached $1 trillion, state television said during its regular evening news program Monday, citing data from the State Administration of Foreign Exchange.
The report didn't say when the country's foreign-exchange reserves reached the $1 trillion level, nor did it give a specific figure for the reserves.
China's foreign-exchange reserves totaled $987.9 billion at the end of September, according to official data.
The TV report didn't give more details.
China overtook Japan as the holder of the world's largest foreign-exchange reserves earlier this year.
China's foreign-exchange reserves have been expanding rapidly in recent years, boosted by the country's huge trade surplus as well as heavy speculative capital inflows from overseas on expectations of yuan appreciation.
The buildup in the foreign-exchange reserves has contributed to flush liquidity in China and has helped fuel rapid credit and investment growth.
As part of its efforts to tighten liquidity, the People's Bank of China said Friday it was raising banks' reserve requirement ratio by 50 basis points from Nov. 15. It was its third such increase this year.
