1 Gender matters

We saw earlier that लड़का    larki means 'boy'
and ल्दिकी  larki means 'girl'.
This contrast between -a in the masculine and -i in the feminine appears in many nouns, adjectives, etc. - in fact it's a characteristic feature of Hindi. See how both adjective and noun change in the following:

मनोज बड़ा  लरका है .
Manoj bara larka hai. Manoj is a big boy.
मीना बड़ी  लार्की है .
Mina bara larki hai. Meena is a big girl.
Masculine बड़ा   bara becomes feminine बड़ी bari. Watch again:

मनोज लम्बा और परतला है .
Manoj lamba aur patla hai. Manoj is tall and thin.
मीना लंबी औए पतीली है .
Mina lambi aur patli hai. Meena is tall and thin .
राम छोटा है .
Riim chota hai. Ram is little

क्या राम अच्छा लड़का  है .
kya Ram accha larka hai? Is Ram a good boy?
मोरी मोटा नहीं है .
Moti mota nahin hai. Moti isn't fat.
लया  मनोज पतला है .
kya Manoj patla hai? Is Manoj thin?
क्या मीना लंबी है ?
kya Mina lambi hai? Is Meena tall?
