Book 10 lesson twelve

lesson twelve Where have I seem that glove before?

SCENE ONE : THE EDITING ROOM

If you got a cold, you'll need to go to the chemist's to buy some medicine. You Americans call that pharmacy or drugstore. And you won't want to miss going to the cinema, or movies, as you call them...

Who's been moving these tapes? The labels are all gone! I'll be here all night!

...Take a flat, that means "rent an apartment". You'll have your own cooker and fridge, so that you can make your own meals. You may be lucky enough to have a lift in the building. That means an elevator... You'll need a elephone, so that you could ring up our world famous theaters for tickets to all the shows...

Oh, come on.

The British call it going on holiday, the Americans call it going on vocation... If you ask for the subway in London, you won't find the underground train system at all. We call that the "underground" or the "tube"....into a car or a large lorry, that's the correct "English" name for a truck. ..We havn't got "gasoline" in England. We've got "petrol"...
I haven't got any patience left. Where is that tape of Terry's interview? I've got the right tape now, I hope this has a clue.
How did I became an editor? When I was growing up I went to the movies all the time, I was fascinated by the way movies were edited. I wasn't enable to get a job editing movies. A friend of mine was working as a writer for a television show. He was shooting a story nobody was interested in buying. He showed it to me and I worked with him to edit it. The producers liked it so much, they hired me.

Okay, Terry, what about your future?
I never know. I'm sure I'll be doing some kind of editing for television. I'll be working in a television like this one.
What kind of editing? Will you be editing mystery stories or news programs? Or will you be editing sports?
I won't be editing sports programs. I don't like sports. I'll be editing mystery programs or news. I like them both.
en. Where's that part about the station?
What was I doing when Rita's travel tape came on? I'm not sure what I was doing when it happened, I know what I was doing when Rita's singing lesson came on the air. I was talking to her in the studio.
But what was Terry doing after the tapes came on? He wasn't watching the monitor. He wasn't working in the editing room.Let's see the interview again.
While everyone were watching the monitor, I went out to see if I could find anybody strange wandering around the station, I just saw Jake. I'm sure he'll be telling Detective Modine what he was doing. I wonder what that means. There is something here that I am missing. Something is bothering me. That glove. I've seen that glove before. Where have I seen that glove before? Roger Ward? I was talking to him when he threw it away. why would Terry have a glove like Roger's?...Jake?...Jake, is that you?...Terry?

And this is the end of lesson twelve.

LESSON 10  WE'LL HAVE TO SOLVE THE MURDER OURSELVES.

SCENE ONE: THE MUSEUM OFFICE
DIANA: Detective Stone will be here in a few minutes. He's fooling himself if he thinks Victor Chapman is innocent.
TONY: The police are too slow. We'll have to solve the murder ourselves.
DIANA: Then we have to find more evidence.
TONY: Maybe Victor Chapman didn't make the fake treaty himself. Maybe somebody made it for him.
DIANA: Philip Tate! Of course! He could do it.
TONY: Does Victor Chapman know Tate?
DIANA: Oh, yes. They're old friends.
TONY: I think Victor Chapman and Mr. Tate are partners.
DIANA: Partners in crime? Why didn't I think of that?
TONY: Give yourself a break, Diana. They were very careful.
DIANA: There must be one thing they forgot to hide.
DIANA: Tony, look. Maybe the fake treaty was made with these. Someone practiced Indian marks with this pen and ink.
TONY: And he used the wrong mark. But how do we prove it?
PHILIP: Oh, I didn't expect to find anyone here. I'll come back later.
TONY: Wait a minute. We want to talk to you.
PHILIP: Yes?
DIANA: This treaty is a fake.
PHILIP: Well, I don't know what you're talking about.
TONY: Then I'll show you.
TONY: This is how you made the fake treaty.
DIANA: I remember. You had black ink on your hand.
PHILIP: No! She's kidding herself. That wasn't ink, I cut myself. It was a bandage.
TONY: There was no bandage. I know. I took these photos myself. They will prove you spilled ink on yourself. You did it, Tate.
PHILIP: They can't put me in jail for having ink on my hand.
DIANA: But they can put you in jail for having blood on your hands!
PHILIP: No!
TONY: Ben Morris discovered the fake treaty. And you killed him because of it!Your fingerprints will be all over the evidence.
PHILIP: No. I didn't kill anyone! I only made the fake treaty.
TONY: Did you make it yourself?
PHILIP: Yes. I made it myself. I needed the money.
DIANA: What about the murder?
PHILIP: That wasn't my idea.
DIANA: So you had a partner ?
PHILIP: Victor Chapman. He killed your uncle.
DETECTIVE STONE: But you were there. You're both guilty.
DIANA: They killed Uncle Ben and then kept his treaty for themselves. Do you believe us now, Detective Stone?
DETECTIVE STONE: Yes. I checked on Victor Chapman. He has a criminal record as long as my arm. Where's Victor?
PHILIP: He left my office five minutes ago. He was going to the post office to send the treaty to a rich collector.
TONY: Where's he sending it?
PHILIP: South America.
DIANA: South America! Detective Stone, you have to stop him. . . or we'll never see the Stamford Treaty again!

BOOK 11
Lesson one  you shouldn't have been working at the studio so late

SCENE ONE: THE STUDIO
Jake:    Chris. Are you all right? What happened?
Chris:    I'm not sure. I was editting the tape when I heard a noise. I thought it was you. When I came out to see who was here, the lights went out and this came crashing down.
Jake:    You shouldn't have been working at the studio so late.
Chris:    I have told you I was going to work late.
Jake:    You should have made sure somebody was with you.
Chris:    I couldn't find anybody. Besides, I wanted to do it alone.
Jake:    Well, if you were going to be alone, you should have locked all the doors.
Chris:    I thought they were locked.
Jake:    Did you check? You should have checked them make sure they were locked.
Chris:    I know,I know. I should have been more careful.
Jake:    And when you heard a noise, you should have called a security guard.
Chris:    I assumed it was you.
Jake:    First rule of journalism, you should never assume anything. Anyway, you should have called the police. You could have gotten killed.
Chris:    I could have, but I didn't. It doesn't matter anymore. Did you see anybody coming out on your way in.
Jake:    No.
Chris:    This was not an accident. Someone might be trying to scare me.
Jake:    Do you have any idea who it might have been.
Chris:    It might have been Terry.
Jake:    It couldn't been Terry.
Chris:    Why not?
Jake:    I saw Terry at the Nature Center.
Chris:    What was he doing there?
Jake:    I am not sure, but I'll find out. Let's get you home.
Chris:    Ok, thanks.
Jake:    What's the matter?
Chris:    I think I twisted my ankle.
Jake:    You should have told me you hurt yourself.
Chris:    I did know until I stood up.
Jake:    Sit down...I'll get some ice.
Chris:    Where are you going? Don't leave me here alone.
Jake:    I keep a chest of ice with some soda in my office. Do you want some soda too?
Chris:    Okay… Oh,I feel I am such an idiot.

Jake:    You should have told me about your ankle. We might have stopped the swelling.
Chris:    Jake.
Jake:    Yeah?
Chris:    I'm glad you're here.
Jake:    So am I, Chris. How does that feel?
Chris:    Cold.
Jake:    So did you find anything out when you were going through the tapes?
Chris:    I think so. Do you remember when you were working with Roger Ward?
Jake:    I'm still working with him.
Chris:    Remember the day he threw his glove out?
Jake:    Not really. What does that have to do with anything?
Chris:    Terry has Roger's glove, or one just like it.
Jake:    Chris, I don't see the connection.
Chris:    There is a connection. I'm not sure what it is. but I know there is one.
Jake:    Okay. Miss Detective. Let's start working.

This is the end of lesson one.

BOOK 11
Lesson 2  Until I came to WEFL, I had never worked with famous person like jake.

    SCENE ONE: THE STUDIO
Jake:    This is going to be a very interesting interview, Mike. We are talking with Thomas Ames, head of Mirage Realty.
Mike:    Who are these people?
Jake:    They claim to be one of the nation's biggest real-estate developers.
Mike:    I am surprised that I haven't heard of them.
Jake:    Chris did some research on them for me. Until recently, no one had ever heard of them.
Mike:    So why we doing a story on them now?
Jake:    This company is trying to build apartments on the Nature Center.

    SCENE TWO: MIRAGE REAL ESTATE
Jake:    Mr. Ames, thank you for talking with us.
Ames:    Anything I can do to help.
Jake:    Mr. Ames, why are you doing this to the Nature Center.
Ames:    Please don't put it that way, Jake. We didn't begin this project. Another company started it. By the time we took over, the plans had already been made.
Jake:    The director of the Nature Center told me that until last week, he hadn't heard a word about the apartments being built.
Ames:    It was a quick deal.
Jake:    Isn't that unusual?
Ames:    I don't have to go through a lot of red tape. I own the company. I make all the decisions.
Jake:    Can you show us the plans?
Ames:    No. I'm sorry, Jake.
Jake:    Why are you building on the Nature Center? Won't big apartments is ruin the beauty of the Nature Center?
Ames:    That's not my problem. I own the land. The Nature Center has been using it for many years, but it's not theirs. But let me tell you, jake, this will be beautiful buildings. They will be built with most modern materials.
Jake:    That's the problem. Mr. Ames. When you planned this, didn't you think about the problems you might cause?
Ames:    When you asked for this interview, I was extremely busy, but I made time for you. Now your times is up.

Jake:    I like your glove.
Ames:    Actualy, it's not mine.
Jake:    Whose is it?
Ames:    Does it matter? ...Good day, Mr. Seltzer.

    SCENE THREE: THE STUDIO
Chris    I guess, I have to admit that I find Jake... Charming... Until I came to WEFL, I had never worked with a famous person like Jake. I hadn't edited a video tape, I had never worked on anything really important before. I hadn't even been in front of a camera. It's all so stimulating... It's hard to tell whether I like Jake, or the job. I gave him sailing lessons once , but they didn't mean much. Until I started working at the WEFL, I have realized what a great guy Jake is. In fact, until just now, I had no idea how much I liked him.

    BOOK 11
Lesson 3 actually I am starved.

    SCENE ONE: THE STUDIO
JAKE:    How long do you have had this bandage on.
CHRIS:    Probably a few days.
JAKE:    I told you you should have gone to the doctor right away. You might have avoided all of this.
CHRIS:    When I got home, I'm soaked it in hot water. I thought it would be fine.
JAKE:    You shouldn't have walked on it.
CHRIS:    That's what the doctor said...He said I shouldn't have soaked it in hot water. I shouldn't have driven the car either, it's ridiculous. How would I have gotten the doctor?
JAKE:    You should have called me, I would have taken you there.
CHRIS:    I tried, but you weren't there.
JAKE:    You should have tried again.
CHRIS:    Oh. Please. Look. If you want to do something for me, I'm sure I can think of something.
JAKE:    What?
CHRIS:    You can go over this research with me.
JAKE:    What is it?
CHRIS:    Uh-uh-uh. I'll show you in a minute. I've learned some things about the Nature Center?
JAKE:    Well, I'm very interested in your research. I'd especially like to hear what you have to say about its history.
CHRIS:    There's a price.
JAKE:    What?
CHRIS:    You can buy me dinner.
JAKE:    Well, I don't know. That's an awful lot to ask.But I...I think I can handle it. Will you hand over the research now?
CHRIS:    When I see dinner, you get the research.

SCENE TWO: THE STUDIO, LATER THE SAME DAY
CHRIS:    Oooh, I shouldn't have eaten all that.
JAKE:    Did you like it? I couldn't tell.
CHRIS:    I was fine until I got the egg rolls, you should have stopped me.
JAKE:    I should have stopped you. Hah! I should stopped myself.
CHRIS:    We shouldn't have ordered so much.
JAKE:    You're right. I think we should have left out the shrimp dish
CHRIS:    No. I like the shrimp. We shouldn't have ordered the spareribs.
JAKE:    Oh. Yes, we should have. It's too much fun watching you eat them.
CHRIS:    So...how is my research?
JAKE:    It's good.
CHRIS:    Oh. You like it?
JAKE:    Write a story. We'll record it in the morning.
CHRIS:    Write it? Record it?
JAKE:    It's the best way to learn.
CHRIS:    I don't have much time.
JAKE:    That's right.I've been looking at my interview with Thomas Ames. He is a very strange man. Remember Roger's glove?
CHRIS:    Yes.
JAKE:    Ames had one too.
CHRIS:    You're kidding! Do you think  he has something to do with what's been going on at the station?
JAKE:    I'm not sure, I'll have to think about it.
RITA:    I thought I smelt Chinese food. Can I join you?
CHRIS:    Sure. Weren't you supposed to have dinner with Terry?
RITA:    Yes. He was going to teach me about cameras. I thought that might be a good hobby for me, you know, photography. I waited and waited, but he didn't show on.
CHRIS:    Oh, no.
RITA:    Yeah. By the time he called, I had already made the entire dinner. I had cooked the roast and set the table. I had made the salad. I had even poured the wine. Waited until I see him face to face. He's going to hear about this, believe me.
CHRIS:    He really stood you up.
RITA:    The only thing I hadn't done was on light the candles.
JAKE:    You should have invited someone else.
RITA:    I'd called a girlfriend, but by the time I called her, she had already made other plans.
CHRIS:    You should have just eaten it yourself.
RITA:    I didn't feel like eating alone. I came here to clean up my make up room a bit.
CHRIS:    We have lots of food left. Stick around and help us finish it.
RITA:    Actually I am starved. Oh, the chicken looks wondful.
CHRIS:    We have egg rolls. We have spareribs. We have chicken. We have shrimp. We have Pecking duck. We have Chinese vegetables. We have rice.

BOOK 11
Lesson 4 If you hadn't smiled so much it would have been better.

SCENE ONE: THE "HELLO AMERICA" SET
CHRIS:    If it hadn't been for G.R. Hertzberg, the Nature Center wouldn't have been started. He provided the money, he owned the land and donated it to the Stamford Nature Center. He built the museum so that young people could learn more about nature. 250,000 people visited the museum each year. The museum is a wonderful place for children. I spoke to many parents and their children today, everyone thinks that the museum is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon.

    SCENE TWO: THE EDITING ROOM
CHRIS:    I never would have shotted it if it hadn't been for you.
JAKE:    It's interesting.
CHRIS:    You don't like it.
JAKE:    If you hadn't smiled so much it would have been better.
CHRIS:    Better? It's bad?
JAKE:    I didn't mean that, I am sorry. It's just that... if you had talked about the value of the Nature Center, it would be more interesting. There's no news here, Chris.
CHRIS:    Oh.
JAKE:    But you are getting there. It's definitely better.
CHRIS:    Would you take me on your next story?
JAKE:    If you hadn't injured yourself, I would have taken you with me today. I went back to see Thomas Ames at Mirage Realty.
CHRIS:    Did you learn anything?
JAKE:    No. If I had gotten there early enough, I could have talked to the secretary. I would have gotten some important infomation. I would have asked for another interview. But Ames's and his secretary were gone by the time I got there.
CHRIS:    What is Ames like?
JAKE:    He is nasty, I don't like him. Of course, I asked him some tough questions. If I'd been nicer the last time I was there, he might have answered my questions.
CHRIS:    What do you know about him?
JAKE:    Thomas Ames is a very rich man. He moved to Stamford last year, started buying everything-land, businesses, hotels. He tried to buy the station. But Sam Finch wouldn't sell it to him.
CHRIS:    Then we'd be working for Thomas Ames?
JAKE:    Not me.
CHRIS:    It's too bad but I twisted my ankle. If I hadn't hurt my ankle, I could helped you more... I'm so sorry my story didn't turn out well. I tried with it, but I guess it isn't as good as I had hoped.
JAKE:    You are getting there, though.
CHRIS:    Can you make me any more suggestions?
JAKE:    Sure, If you had taken a picture behind a child, you could have shown where the apartments will be.
CHRIS:    I see what you mean.
