मेरा – my/mine  (Adjective gender agreement – मेरा or मेरी)
» Adjective gender agreement – मेरा or मेरी
Why do you see मेरा to mean “my” but other times you see मेरी to also mean “my”?  The reason is “gender”.  Let us start with an obvious example.  Sons are masculine and daughters are feminine.  So I would say “my son” by saying “मेरा बेटा”.  However, if I were to say, “My daughter”, I would say “मेरी बेटी”   You see this same pattern when you talk about  “my sister”, and “my brother”.

My brother is मेरा भाई

My sister is मेरी बहिन

मेरा goes with a masculine noun

मेरी goes with a feminine noun

But it is not just people that have gender.  A “table” has a gender in Hindi too!  मेज़ means table in Hindi and it is feminine.  Therefore it is correct to say मेरी मेज़

Bed also has a gender in Hindi.  पलंग is bed in Hindi and it is masculine.  Therefore say “मेरा पलंग”.

How do you know if a noun is masculine or feminine?  You have to look it up in the dictionary and remember it.

Here are some other common nouns with their gender.  See if you can figure out if you should say “मेरा or मेरी”

अख़बार –newspaper (masculine)

अलमारी – cupboard (feminine)

आम – mango (m)

इमारत – building (f)

In the paid subscriber area, you can hear each word by itself along with “mera/meri”:

If you are not a paid subscriber, then you should become one before April 1st and save $1/month.  If you subscribe before April first, you will get locked in at the rate of $12 for every 6 months.  However, if you wait until after April 1st, then it will be $12 for every 4 months.

Here are the additional words we go over.

उपहार – gift (m)

कमरा – room (m)

कहानी – story (f)

काम – work (m)

किताब – book (f)

खाना – food (m)

खिड़की – window (f)

खिलौना – toy (m)

गाँव – village (m)

गीत – song (m)

घर – house (m)

चपाती – chapatti (f)

चप्पल – sandal (f)

चम्मच – spoon (m)

चाँदी – silver (f)

चाबी – key (f)

चीज़ – thing (f)

छाता – umbrella (m)

छुरी – knife (f)

जगह – place (f)

जन्मदिन – birthday (m)

ज़मीन – land (f)

» Where? or Where. – कहाँ? जहाँ।
Today we learn about the other word that means “Where”.  There is a question word, कहाँ that means “Where is something?”   There there is another word for “Where” that refers to an unspecified place.  For example, the sentence, “Home is where the heart is.”  Or the phrase, “Where there is love, there is peace.”  Both of those sentences have the word “Where” in them, but it is not the question word.  (Actually, I never thought about this until I started to learn Hindi and found out there are two words that mean “where” because there are actually two purposes that we use the word “where” for in English.  You can learn a lot about your own language by learning a different one.)  Before we cover that, let us review the questions from the last lesson.

Answers to Questions
At the bottom of the last lesson, I put 10 questions for you to answer.  If you have not done so already, please listen to it and try to complete the questions.
Use the correct form of रहना (rahanaa) the verb that means to live or to stay.  (Example:  I stay in Houston.)  Your choices are रहता, रहती, or रहते.

1) आप कहाँ ___रहते___ हैं?  (talking to a man)

2) आप कहाँ ___रहती____ हैं?  (talking to a woman)

3) मैं दिल्ली में ___रहता____ हूँ। (spoken by a man)

4) मैं आगरा में ___रहती____ हूँ। (spoken by a woman)

What do the following words mean:

5) सिर्फ __only______

6) मैं ___I_____

7) में ____in_____  (This is very similar to the previous word (6), but there is a very slight difference.  Notice how question 6 has 2 lines and the word in question 7 only has one line on the top?  Despite how close they are written and pronounced, they mean completely different things.)

8) बच्चा ___child_____

Translate the following into Hindi:

9) vegetarian  __शाकाहरी ______

10) non-vegetarian  __माँसाहारी__

Today’s lesson

Use कहाँ (kahaan) to ask “Where?” something is.  If you want to ask, “Where is your car?”, “Where is your house?”, “Where are you from?”, “Where do you work?” and the like, use कहाँ (kahaan).

If you want to talk about an unspecified location, for example: “Where my purse is, there my keys are too.”, “Look where you found the papers.”, “Where the home is there the heart is.”, then you need to use जहाँ (jahaan).

You need to be care, not all questions with “where” in it use the कहाँ (kahaan) form.  Consider this sentence: “Did you look where you found the box?”  In this sentence “Did” is the question word, and “where” is used in the same sense as a statement.

Let us look at some contrasting sentences.  In each pair, the first one uses कहाँ (kahaan) and in the second one it uses जहाँ (jahaan):

1) आप कहाँ हैं? (aap kahaan hain) – Where are you?

2) जहाँ आप हैं मैं वहाँ हूँ। (jahaan aap hain mein vahaan huun) – Where you are, I am there.

1) मेरी किताब कहाँ है? (merii kitaab kahaan hai) – Where is my book?

2) जहाँ मेरी किताब है वहाँ मेरी ऐनक है। (jahaan merii kitaab hai vahaan meri einak hai) -   Where my book is there my glasses are.

1) कहाँ मेरा खाना है?  (kahaan meraa khaanaa) – Where is my food?

2) जहाँ मेरा खाना है वहाँ मेरा पानी भी है। (jahaan meraa khaanaa hai vahaan mera paanii bhi hai) -  Where my food is there my water is also.

पानी – water (Water, question about pronouns, win a $5 Amazon giftcard)
Another Word for Water
In our last podcast, we challenged you to come by the website and give us another word for “water”.  You already know पानी.  But there is another one.

JohnnyJi left a comment with a clue:

Can I leave a clue about the other word for water besides “pani”? Recently Suresh did a lesson about a fish nursery rhyme. The word is there & also there was an older podcast about a turtle and a frog :)

Here are the lessons that JohnnyJi refers to:

Lesson 6 from Suresh A Nursery (नर्सरी) Rhyme (कविता )in Hindi (हिंदी)
The Frog in the Well
जल and नीर are the other words for पानी.

Question about pronouns
How many of these pronouns do you know in Hindi?

I, we, you, he, she, they, this, that, these, those, someone, somebody, anyone, no one, anything, nothing, everything, who, what, whom, and one’s self.  (page 93 in Namaste Jii).  Can you use them in sentences?  Are there any other pronouns that you can think of?  Come leave it as a comment on this episode.  We will go over the answers on Tuesday’s podcast.  Everyone that leaves at least one (correct) pronoun will be entered into a $5 Amazon.com gift card drawing.  We will also give a $5 Amazon.con gift card to the one with the best answer (in our opinion).  We will announce the winners on Tuesday’s podcast. Also, come by the website and give this podcast a 1 to 5 star rating this podcast.

चाहिये – want/need (चाहिए (chahie) – wanted/needed (1/10/2009)

(vah kiskii gaarii hai?)

Whose car is that?

3) वे __किसकी_____ छोटी चिड़ियाँ हैं?

(yah kiskaa bagiichaa hai?)

(ve kiske bare kamare hain?)

Whose big rooms are those?

Translate the following from English to Hindi:

7) this – यह (yah)

8) that – वह (vah)

9) these – ये (ye)

10) those -  वे (ve)

Lesson

The sentence pattern for “I want food” is different in Hindi.  In Hindi I would say “Food is wanted to (by) me.”  You can see how this would change everything.  It is not the person that is the subject of the sentence, instead it is the thing that is wanted.  Also, you have to use a different pronoun.  Notice how when we switch around the sentence above “I” became “me”.  A similar thing happens in Hindi.

In English, we would say “I want food.”

In Hindi, we say “मुझको खाना चाहिए” (mujhko khaanaa chahie).

Do you want food?

क्या आपको खाना चाहिए? (kyaa aahko khaanaa chaahie)

He/she/it (close by) wants food.

इस को खाना चाहिए. (is ko kaanaa chaahie)

He/She/It (over there) wants food.

उस को खाना चाहिए. (us ko khaanaa chaahie)

These (people) want food.

इन को खाना चाहिए.  (in ko khaanaa chaahie)

They want food.

उन को खाना चाहिए. (un ko khaanaa chaahie)

In the above sentences, you might have wanted to use मैं (main), यह (yah), वह (vah), ये (ye), or वे (ve).  However, when a pronoun is followed by a postposition, like को, it changes.  This is called the “oblique case”.   Here is an important chart to remember:

Direct case Oblique case
मैं  (main) मुझ  (mujh)
तू  (tuu) तुझ (tujh)
हम (ham) हम  (no change)
तुम (tum) तुम (no change)
आप (aap) आप (no change)
यह (yah) इस (is)
वह (vah) उस (us)
ये (ye) इन (in)
वे ve) उन (un)

You can replace “food” (खाना (khaanaa)) with any other noun, for example, “water” (पानी (panii)) or “room” (कमरा (kamaraa)) or “house” (घर (ghar)) or “car” (गाड़ी).

Consider these sentences:

यह प्यासा है। इस को पानी चाहिए।

(yah pyaasaa hai.  is ko paanii chaahie.)

He is thirsty.  He wants water.

See how we used यह in the “He is thirsty.” sentence, but then refer to the same person using इस in the “He wants water.”  This is a very important difference to understand with using चाहिए.  But it is not just चाहिए, you see this same form with many other verbs.  We will talk more about those in future lessons.

When using a proper noun in a sentence like “Nathan wants a car”, you just need to put को after the proper noun.

नेतिन को एक गाड़ी चाहिए।

(netin ko ek gaarii chaahie)

We will talk more about this in tomorrow’s lesson.  Try these review questions to make sure you understand what was covered.

Give the Oblique case for the following pronouns which are listed in the direct case:

1) मैं

2) वे

Translate the following sentences from English into Hindi:

3) Do you want water?

4) They (over there) want a car.

5) He (close by) does not want a house.

Fill in the blank:

6) वे प्यासे हैं।  ____ पानी चाहिए।

7) जब  मुझे भूख लगती है तब ____  खाना चाहिए।

Translate the following from Hindi into English:

8) गाड़ी –

9) कमरा –

10) कमरे –

Moral Compulsion – I have to … (because of my obligations)
Two lessons ago we talked about Internal Compulsion.  I have to learn Hindi (because I want to learn it.)  Yesterday, we talked about external compulsion.  I have to learn Hindi (because my teacher is going to quiz me.).  Today we look at moral compulsion.  I have to learn Hindi (because it is the right thing to do.)

Before we get into moral compulsion, let us go over the translation questions at the end of yesterday’s “External Compulsion” episode.

1) I must read books in Hindi.

मुझको हिंदी में किताबें पढ़नी पड़ती हैं।

2) The students must study for class.

छात्रों को कक्षा के लिये पढ़ना पड़ता है।

3) The boy must play chess.

लड़के को शतरंज खेलना पड़ता है।

What is moral obligation?  It is something that you “should” or “ought to” do.

I should not drink alcohol.

मुझको शराब नहीं पीनी चाहिये।

Vegetarians ought not to eat meat.

शाकाहारी को मांस नहीं खाना चाहिये।

You should call your mom.

आपको अपनी माता जी को कॉल करना चाहिये।  (you could also say फोन करना)

(At first, I thought it should be करनी because माता appeared to be the object.  However, it is really “call” that is getting done.  And this is why it is करना.)

You ought to go to school.

तुमको स्कूल जाना चाहिये।

Do you see the pattern?  Use the same form as internal compulsion.  This means that the verb agrees with the object in both number and gender. Then remove the helping verb on the end, and add चाहिये.  Notice that चाहिये does not change.

Try translating these sentences into Hindi:

1) You should eat vegetables.

2) He should take his medicine.

3) Sunil should study for school.

How can we become proficient at speaking and writing Hindi?  Only through lots, and lots of practice.  One type of practice you should routinely do is to take a pattern and create variations.

Consider this basic sentence:

मैं हूँ।

These two words almost always go together.  If you start a sentence with मैं (I), expect to end it with हूँ (am), even if you do not see a corresponding “am” in the English sentence.

Now let’s look at a pattern using the verb खाना which means “to eat”.

मैं खाता हूँ। – I eat.

मैं मछली खाता हूँ। – I eat fish.

मैं रात को मछली खाता हूँ।  – I eat fish at night.

मैं रोटी के साथ मछली खाता हूँ।  – I eat fish with roti.

मैं घर पर मछली खाता हूँ।  – I eat fish at home.

You can imagine these being the answers to:

क्या आप मछली खाते हैं?  – Do you eat fish?

or perhaps आप क्या खाते हैं?  – What do you eat?

Notice that the meaning of क्या is completely different in these two sentences.  In the first one, it turns it into a “yes/no” question.  In the second sentence, it means “what”.  Notice that if you see क्या at the beginning of the sentence it is turning a statement into a question, and if you see it in the middle of the sentence, it means “what”.

आप कब मछली खाते हैं?  – When do you eat fish?

आप मछली किस के साथ खाते हैं?  – With what do you eat fish?

आप कहाँ मछली खाते हैं?  – Where do you eat fish?

Try doing creating a similar set of sentences with a verb of your choice and come to the website ISpeakHindi.com and add your examples in a comment.  Here are some possible verbs you could use:

गाना – to sing

नाचना – to dance

लिखना – to write

पढ़ना – to read

Also, all the examples above where given in the masculine forms.  Do you know the feminine forms?  Come by the website and leave them in a comment.
