Thaksin Family Wealth Tally Draws Critics' Ire as Too Low
-- The assets of ousted Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's family were valued at 12.65 billion baht ($340 million) as of March 2006, Thailand's anticorruption agency said.
Critics immediately denounced that figure, contending it is just a fraction of the wealth Mr. Thaksin has allegedly stashed away in secret accounts.
Mr. Thaksin, one of Southeast Asia's richest men before taking office in 2001, was widely accused of corruption and crafting policy to enrich himself and his friends. The military council that ousted his government is investigating the corruption allegations.
Critics said the figure provided by the National Counter-Corruption Commission was misleading and inaccurate because Mr. Thaksin transferred large sums of money and stock holdings to relatives and others close to him, including his maid and driver.
U.S. magazine Forbes ranked Mr. Thaksin the 18th-richest man in Southeast Asia in 2005 with a fortune of $1.3 billion, a figure that opponents believe is a more accurate indicator of his wealth.
Mr. Thaksin and his family declared assets of 15.12 billion baht when he took office in 2001.
One of Mr. Thaksin's highest-profile, and most-criticized, deals was his family's sale of the telecom empire Shin Corp., which brought the family $1.9 billion and was structured so the family paid no taxes on the proceeds.
The gains of that sale didn't register in the asset disclosure because Mr. Thaksin and his wife had transferred their ownership in Shin to their two older children, who are over the age of 20, and Mr. Thaksin's brother-in-law Banpot Damapong -- none of whom are required to report their assets to the NCCC.
