Dell Begins Selling Laptops With Chips From AMD
SAN FRANCISCO -- Dell Inc. has begun selling laptop computers that use chips from Advanced Micro Devices Inc., further reducing its reliance on technology from Intel Corp.
The big computer maker previously announced plans to use AMD chips in desktop PCs and server systems, ending its exclusive relationship with Intel. Dell had not discussed plans to make AMD-powered portables.
But Dell's Web site has begun prominently displaying an AMD-based laptop called the Inspiron 1501. A low-end system that uses AMD's low-end Sempron chip starts at $549; models starting at $704 and $859 use AMD's Turion 64 chip. CNET News.com reported the development.
Dell spokesmen could not immediately be reached.
Laptop computers have long been one of Intel's strongholds, in part because of a bundle of chips called Centrino that offer advantages in power savings. But AMD has begun to expand its share of that market, which has been growing faster than the desktop PC market.
"We have expected this to happen, but now that it has, what a big win for AMD," said Samir Bhavnani, an analyst at Current Analysis. "For Intel, it's like your longtime girlfriend telling you she wants to see other people."
