lesson one
It's not bad, but I think it needs more work

Scene one: The editing room

I'm Chris Bloom, hoping you have more of everything you want  this spring.

Thanks for looking at my work, Jake.
I'm glad to help, Chris. People help me when I was just an assistant. Besides you are an old friend.
Before you say anything, remember you are watching my first interview.
That's okay. Most new reporters don't do very well in their first try.
What do you mean?could you be more specific?
Most television viewers don't have much patience. They want faster interviews.  They want more action-more questions-more answers-more pictures.
Do you think my interview is boring?
I don't think all of it is boring.
You just think half of it is boring.
I think some of it is boring, but I also think some of it is great, really interesting.
Which part do you think is interesting?
What are you doing?
I am eating my lunch.
It's only 10 o'clock in the morning. Most people eat breakfast now.
Well, I won't eat all of it now.

Do you want a piece of cake?
No, thanks.

You can have half of my sanwich. I'll eat more lunch later. At lunch time.
Thanks, really. I don't want any of it. It's too early in the morning for me to eat. And it's definitely too early for a salami sanwich.
Sorry, I eat when I'm nervous. Please Jake, I need your help on this.
Don't be nervous, I'm trying to help you. You should have seen my first tape, it was terrible, it was so bad, they couldn't even use it.
Not even part of it?
No, all of it was terrible.
Look, I know that you are busy, and you probably don't have time for me. But ...
I have to admit I am pretty busy, the new owner wants me to get better ratings, I'd like to have more time for so many things.
Please go over my tape for one more time, and tell me how I can make it better.
Sure. But first you have to do one thing.
Anything.
Get rid of this sanwich, I can't stand when people eat in the editing room.

It's gone.
Explain once more what  you were trying to do.
My assignment for school wants to interview people about their lives. so I thought it would be interesting to ask people what's missing in their lifes. What would make their lives better.  And I just asked anyone who walked by.
Should I play it now?
Sure.

Scene two Outside the studio

Hello, this is Chris Bloom. Today is the first day of spring. It's a time when people feel energetic.
They have a new outlook on life. We decided to find out what people want out of their lives this spring.

More time, I definitely want to find more time.
More money, and fewer financial problems.
More love in my life, that's what I want.
More friends.
More clothes, more money and fewer arguments.
Less crime, and more parking places.
Less pressure, and more time to enjoy life.
But the answer most people gave was time, more people want more time to accomplish their goals and enjoy their lives. I am Chris Bloom, hoping you have more of everything you want this spring.

SCENE THREE THE EDITING ROOM

It's not bad, but I think it needs more work. The problem is it's not a news, we will never use it on the air. We need find a real news story.
Like what?
Come on, I will show you. I just was told someone wants to take over part of the Stamford Nature Centre and turn it into apartment buildings.
Oh, no, boy. That's a story. May I bring my camera?
Sure.

book 10 lesson 2  Do you like to live dangerously, Rita?

SCENE 1 THE STUDIO

How's my favorite camera man? Oh! My back!
Those tapes were too heavy for you.
A few years ago I could carry twenty tapes if i wanted.
We all get older.
You know, Mike.I never thought  it would come this fast. I just can't believe it's time for me to retire. How did I get so old so fast?
Most people don't retire at your age. You look great.
I feel great. In fact I feel marvelous
So, why are you retiring?
I love my job, I love being a make up artist. But I always promise myself I would start a new life when I reached this age.
I think that's terrific. There are so many things you can do with your life. You are still young enough to enjoy yourself.
You bet I am. And there are a lot of things I can still do pretty well. I can still play tennis beautifully.
I've seen you.  You are a wonderful tennis player.
I am a very good swimmer. I can ski fairly well too.
And you dance gracefully.
Gracefully? That's a word for an old lady, Mike.
Excuse me, you're a hot dancer.
That's more like it. I am not going to retire and sit around in a rocking chair I can tell you that.
What are those?
These are videos from all over the world. I can live anywhere I want now. I can do anything I want.
You have a whole new life in front of you.
That's true. I want you to do me a favour.
Sure.
I don't have time to watch all these tapes. I can't even carry all of them. Can you edit these onto a shorter tape? I want to show them to Terry so we can dicide where I should go.
Terry?
My new boyfriend.
I want to meet this Terry.
He's a nice person. You'll like him. He's an editor, and he's been doing some work on the mystery program, "Murderer at Midnight".
Any friend of yours is a friend of mine.
Thanks Mike. Hey. Look at all these places I can go. Singapore, Grant Turk Island, the Bahamas,Italia,Mexico...

SCENE TWO THE EDITING ROOM
Rita, these tapes are fabulous.
This tape is about the Grand Turk Island. This maybe the spot where Chrisopher Columbus reached America.  Look at that beautiful beach, you could live here comfortably and never have another worry... A lot of tourists arrive in Grand Turk Isaland every week. They come here to relax and have a good time. But the best thing here is the scuba diving. If you like to dive, this is the place for you.  Look at her, she's so graceful. Doesn't she swim beautifully?  Do you like to live dangerously, Rita?  Well, it can be dangrous under water... Don't touch that, it will hurt you. The scuba divors love the water here at Grand Turk, but they're also careful about what the touch and where they swim.  I've been to Grand Turk . You'd love it for a year or two, but it might be too quiet for you. There are no nightclubs, no discotheques, watch this next tape if want something fun!

Lesson 3  we're experiencing technical difficulties.

SCENE 1 the editing room

Grand Turk Island maybe too quiet for you, Rita. If you want more excitement, here is Singapore.  This is the mysterious Orient... The food is the best in the world...  The people are interesting, they come from all over the world. But Singapore is crowded, and you can't live here cheaply Rita. Singapore is expensive.
Milan is more relaxed... It's a centre of culture... Milan has more nightclubs and fewer problems than Singapore. And the men are all very romantic, Rita.(注:此处书本上没有all,但是本人听了十数遍,认为确实有all,同学们一起听一下) You could live here nicely.
That's all for now, I have to run.

SCENE 2 THE OFFICE

Before say anything else Jake, I want to  compliment you, I think you are doing a fine job.
Thank you, and I think you're doing a great job too, people seem to be very happy here, you are a good producer. By the way, I like your beard.
Thanks. But I have a problem. Peter Case, my boss, the man owned the station, hoped he could improve the ratings. Instead, our audience is disappearing.
What? I thought we were doing well.
Bad things keep happening Jake. For example, we showed three movies last month. They were very inexpensive, and we found out why. They all had technical problems. Bad sound, bad picture.  We won't buy cheap movies anymore.
I guess it's like what Abe Lincoln said:" you can fool some of the people all the time,  you can  fool all of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all the people all the time."
There's another problem. Look at these ratings. We lost half of our audience last night.
How is that possible?
Everything was going beautifully, and then you did your story-and we lost half of our audience.
In the middle of my story?
In the middle of your story.
Something is going on steven, people don't just tune out in the middle of a story.
I know.
Maybe it's a technical problem.
I'll check that.
I'll ask my new editor, Have you met him? He is very good.
Who is he?
Roger Ward. I went to college with him. He edited  in an aworld-winning show on Iran. He's an excellent  editor. He works quickly and professionally.
Can he work well with people? Maybe he can work with that assistant Chris.
I don't about Chris, but I'll get something flashy for tonight's news.
Thanks Jake, I knew I could count on you.

SCENE 3 THE "HELLO AMERICA" SET
In Washington today, the president made an important dicissions about the budget. Connie Swift  is at the white house with a report of the President's announcement.

Milan has more nightclubs and fewer problems in Singapore, and the men are all very romantic. You could live here nicely.

I'm sorry, we're experiencing  technical difficulties. Obviously that was not Connie Swift at the White House. We'll have the story for you a little late in the show. First, here's the Jim Stuart at the mayor's office.
Steven, what happened? How did Rita's tape get on the air?
Something is going on here, and I don't like it.

Lesson 4 That was one of the strangest mistakes I have even seen.

SCENE 1 THE MAKE UP ROOM

You've been the make up person here for a long time, Rita. Can you tell me one of your favourite moments in WEFL?
There'are so many... This woman, was one of the most difficult people I have ever worked with.
Why?
She was too energetic, she wouldn't seat still.
It must have been hard to put on her make up.
It was one of the worst make up jobs I have even done.
It couldn't been that tough.
It was. She had lipstick on her eyes.
You really love your work, don't you?
Oh, yes. I love WEFL.
So it's going to be hard for you to leave?
Oh, yes and no. Of course after what happened. I'd like to run away for ever.
You mean the video tapes? How did that happen?
I don't know. That was one of the strangest mistakes I have ever seen.
It was strange.
It was also one of the most embarassing moments I have ever had.
En. So when you leave, where will you go? What will you do?
There are all kinds of possibilities.
Like what?
I always wanted to be a belly dancer.
Oh, Come on.
Well. On my last vocation, I went to Florita , to Palm Beach.
I have heard about that place.
It was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to.
Really?
And it has some of the most beautiful beachs I have ever seen.
So? Are you moving there?
NO. It was one of the most boring places I have ever gone to.
I need excitement and fun. And someone will make me relax.

SCENE 2 THE "HELLO AMERICA" SET
The next segment is a weekend update on travel. What happens when you take the vocation in Britain? It's easy, right? Everyone there uses exactly the same english words, right? Wrong. That's why we'll find out James Morgen.
This is James Morgen reporting on travel. The British called it going on holiday, the Americans call it going on vocation. Either way, travelling in Britain can be surprisingly easy and fun. But you'll need to know British English or travelling will be rather difficult. For example, if you ask for the subway in Lundon, you won't find the underground train systems  at all,  we call that underground or the tube. You travel by car on a motor way, you need an international driving license. You also need to drive on the left hand side of the road if you don't want to crash inoto a car or a large lorry. That's the correct "English" name for a truck. We havn't got Gasoline in England, we've got Petrol. If you don't call it by its proper name, you'll run into a problems. If you want to buy Petrol, you need to get a "Petrol station". So, travel to Britain, the British will be delighted to see you there, especially if you spend a lot of money. But, please, mind your language, call things by their proper names. This is James Morgen on travel.
James Morgen will be a regular feature on "the weekend report" from now on. I'm Jack Selsor for all of us at Hello America.

LESSON 5 It's all so misterious.

SCENE 1 THE EDITING ROOM

You've been here for a week, Roger, how do you like it?
Just fine, Jake. I'm glad to had a few extra weeks to help out an old friend.
Well, it's great to have you at WEFL. We need a good editor, and we need some good ratings. You'll like Mike Davis. he's such a good camera man. His work is excellent. His work is so good that I hardly need to edit it.
Well, then you don't need me.
Of course we need you, Roger, but Mike does such good work that editing is easier. Here, let me show you...Ha, this place is so messy that I can never find anything. It was cleaned yesterday. Ah, here it is.

Look at this, it's the Nature Center.
It's pretty.
It's also important to the whole city.
But someone is planning to building apartment buildings here, in these woods.
So what?
Apartment building could ruin the Nature Center. It's such an important decision that WEFL is asking some tough questions about it. We don't have very many answers yet, it's all so mysterious.

Hey. What's wrong with the tape?
I don't understand what's going on here? The whole tape is like this. It's damaged.
When you figure it out, let's get to work.
I don't get it. I looked at this last night and it was perfect. Now the tape is so damaged that I can't use it.
Better talk to your cameraman. Meanwhile, it's such a beautiful day and I think I'll go for a drive.

What're you doing?
I don't need it. I lost the other one. Oh, well... Hi.
Hello.
Wow! Roger Ward!  He's such a good editor. He did the famous program about Iran. It was one of the best peices of Journalism I have ever seen. I think he won an award.
This is so strange, that I can't believe it. The tape was perfect yesterday. Chris, you didn't look at this tape without me, did you?
No, what happened?,
It's in such bad condition, that I can't even watch it.
Oh. No. How?
I don't know. First it was Rita's silly tape, now this. I don't know what to think.
I shot some video in the Nature Center.
You have a good little camera. I might be able to use it. I am so upset with this mess that I'll try anything.
Okay, I'll go get the tape. Jake? Can I help you with this story? I know people at the Nature Center, I would love to work with you.
Sure.
All Right!

SCENE 2 THE EDITING ROOM, LATER THE SAME DAY

I'm trying to figure out how is this vocation tape... got out on the air... This wiring is such a mass that I'll never figure it out... Someone might have left the tape in an editing machine. But how could someone put it on the air by mistake? I thought so much about it that I'm dizzy. I couldn't have given the wrong tape to the tape operator by accident. I'm so sure I didn't give him this tape that I'd bet money on it... And what happened to Jake's tape? The editing seemed okay... Here's an answer here somewhere, and I'll find it.

LESSON 6 DO YOU THINK THAT SOMEONE WAS SPYING ON THIS

SCENE 1 THE EDITING ROOM

Hey! Look at that shot. That's one of the best shots I have ever done. Do you think you can use it?
I am not sure. Maybe.Let's look at it again.
You went so fast, I think you passed the spot.
Nope, listen. I've done this so much that I can feel exactly when it's the right time to stop.
You're amazing.
Yeah. The shots looks okay.
That's such a great compliment coming from you.
You can see where the apartment will be.
It's one of the prettiest places I've seen. And they are going to ruin it. It's such a stupid place to put apartments.
Some of these shots might work, Jake.
The camera is so shaky, I can't see what's happening.
What is that? I don't remember anyone out there. Of course I was holding the camera for such a long time that my arm almost fell off.
The tape is moving so fast I can't see. Let's slow it down.
Look at that. That's a person.
Wait a minute.
I was there, Mike was there, you were there. But I don't remember anybody else.
It's such a strange  place for someone to be, behind a tree.
It's so strange that I'm beginning to get a little uncomfortable.
What are you going to do?
I don't know yet.
Do you think that someone was spying on us?
It looks that way,  but who?
I hate to say, but it's probably someone right here at the station. Who knew that we are going on there?
Not many people. Uh, Steven, Roger, you, me, Mike and... That's it.
And Rita.
Rita?
You know Rita, she's so nice that people tell her everything. I told her about going to the Nature Center with you.
What do you know about Rita's new friend?
He's one of the nicest guys she's ever gone out with. He's such a nice guy that she likes to marry him. And he's an editor for the mysterious program "Murder at Midnight".
What's his name?
I can't remember, ah...Terry something. Wait...I have it here on this tape. I've been interviewing people at the station, I did a long interview with Rita. She told me about Terry.
Can I see it?
Yes, of course.

You work so hard that you don't have much time for anything else.
It's true. I've been so busy that I havn't had much of a social life. In fact, my social life wasn't great until resently.
What's changed?
I met a man. He's one of the most interesting men I've ever known. He's so interesting that I don't even think about my job.
What's his name?
Terry. Terry, Smithers. I never thought I'd feel this way toward anybody again. A friend introduced us. We went out to dinner, and we had such a good time that we stayed until the resturant closed. And the food was so bad! It was one of the worst resturants I've ever been to. It was so bad that it was funny. We laughed so hard, we cried. It was wonderful. We talked about everthing. And after that, we went dancing.
Oh, no.
Yes, he's such a good dancer.
You are too.
You should have seen us dance. We danced so well together that people stopped to watch. And we've been together ever since.

Rita is such a talker, she knew you were taping her , didn't she?
Yes, I've taping everyone at this station.
You didn't tape me.
I'm saving the best for last.
People like to talk to you. I'd  like to see more of your interviews. Maybe we'll find a clue to what's going on here.
