Lesson 7 I keep trying to figure out why.

SCENE ONE: THE PARK

I love the peace and quiet here.  I have no desire to go back to work.
I wish I didn't have to go back to work either, but there're so much to do.
You are so mysterious. You haven't even told me where you are working on.
Murderer at Midnight.
I know that, but you've been working on something else. I have so many questions and you avoid answering them. Sometimes I feel that I don't really know you.
Ask me any thing.
Why do you need me to ask Mike to let you enter that editing room?
Anything but that. You'll find it out soon.
I keep trying to figure out why. I think I know that reason but it just doesn't make sense.
Forget it. Can't you just think about us? I love you, Rita.
About us?
Yes.
But why?
Maybe it's the way you dance.
Maybe we should go dancing more often.
I love the way you make me laugh.

SCENE TWO: THE STUDIO

I have to hand in this report tomorrow, and have to type it up by myself.
Thank heaven for computers. If I make a mistake, I don't have to type it over. I just cross over  the mistake... Oh, I am such a bad typist. It's so hard to pick out the mistakes on this screen. Fortunately this computer can check spelling.  I just hit this button, the computer points out the mistakes and fills in the correct spelling automaticly.  I just need to print out the pages... And run off some copies... And we're all set... I forgot to clean up... Have to put away the pencils... Throw away this paper...
And shut off the computer.

SCENE THREE: THE "WEEKEND UPDATE" SET
Hello. This is James Morgen with another report on travel. A good way to visit our countries to stay for fortnight  or longer... stay for a year. And paces is slower, and your trip will be much less expensive if you plan well. In that case,  it will be much cheaper if you take a flat in London. Take a flat. That means "rent an apartment". And you'll have your own cooker and fridge so that you can make your own meals.  You may be lucky enough to have a lift in the building.  That means an elevator... You'll need a telephone so that you can ring up our world famous theaters for tickets to all the shows. That's my favourite pastime in london- the theatre... So please come, we'd love to have you. I am James Morgen on travel.

郁闷。不小心把听写的文本给消掉了,又得重打。不过感觉还不错,嘿嘿。因为今天这课没有生词,比较轻松就听下来了,大概错误十几处,比起前几课几十上百处,感觉真爽。
BOOK 10
LESSON EIGHT IT'S IMPORTANT TO LISTEN TO PEOPLE AND WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY

SCENE ONE: THE STUDIO

I've been working at WEFL for many years no. I love my job. When I look back on those years, I miss some of the people I used to work with. It can get crazy here sometimes, but I don't pay any attention. I just laugh at people who take themselves too seriously. It's important to listen to people and what they have to say. That's probably why I'be been able to stay here so long. I pay attentioin to details, and I keep a sense of humor about my job.

SCENE TWO: THE EDITING ROOM

That's Mike for you.
Well, how did you like that interview?
In my opinion, it was (so) interesting. 原文没有SO,我认为有。
Do you want to look at it again?
No. Did he talk about Rita or Terry?
I asked him what he thought about Rita's new boyfriend.
And?
He didn't know very much about him.
Did he find the technical problem?
No. He talked about it a little bit. He's looking for a bad wire in the control room. Jake, you don't think that Mike had anything to do with it, do you?
No, I don't.  Did you talk to anybody else?
Not yet. I'm going to talk to Terry later today.
Good. Ask him how often he goes to the Nature Center. So there's nothing else for me to look at?
Well. Yes, there is.
What?
My latest story for school. Will you look at it and tell me what you think about it?
Is there anything special you want me to look for?
Just watch for mistakes. And promise you won't laugh at me.
I never laugh at you.
Okay. Here goes. I worked on this for a whole day. So be kind.
I'm waiting for you to turn it on.
Ok.

Spring! It's the time for new beginnings. Long walks and romance. Has spring fever come to Stamford?
Jake, what did you think of my story?
Well, I thought it was remarkable.
You promised not to laugh.
I'm not laughing.
Oh.You!
Look out! You'll break something.
You're getting betting, Chris. It's still not news, but it's getting better.
I think spring romance is interesting. Look at all the plays and movies about it.
The subjects is interesting, but it's not news, Chris. Who cares? Find a real story.
Like what?
OK. You want to work on the Nature Center story? Look at the history of the Nature Center. How did it start? Why can a(the) developer buy (a) land right on the property?...I have a show to do.  这里原文没有a,我觉得他有a 。不过这个不是很确定。不像上面的so,我是可以打包票肯定有的。还有the developer 肯定是正确的,而不是原文中的a.

BOOK 6 LESSON 10

Lesson 10  We'll have to solve the murder ourselves.

Detective Stone will be here in a few minutes.

He's fooling himself if he thinks Victor Chapman is innocent.

The police are too slow.

We'll have to solve the murder ourselves.

Then we have to find more evidence.

Maybe Victor Chapman didn't make the fake treaty himself.

Maybe somebody made it for him.

Philip Tate! Of course! He could do it.

Does Victor Chapman know Tate?

Oh,yes.They're old friends.

I think Victor Chapman and Mr.Take are partners.

Parners in crime? Why didn't I think of that?

Give yourself a break,Diana. They were very careful.

There must be one thing they forgot to hide.

Tony, look.Maybe the fake treaty was made with these.

Someone practiced Indian marks with this pen and ink.

And he used the wrong mark. But how do we prove it?
Oh,I didn't expect to find anyone here.I'll come back later.Wait a minute.
We want to talk to you.

Yes? This treaty is fake.

Well,I don't know what you're talking about.

Then I'll show you.

This is how you made the fake treaty.

I remember. You had black ink on your hand.

No! She's kidding herself.

That wasn't ink,I cut myself. It was a bandage.

There was no bandage.I know.

I took these photos myself.

They will prove you spilled ink on yourself. You did it,Tate.

They can't put me in jail for having ink on my hand.

But they can put you in jail for having blood on your hands! No!

Ben Morris discovered the fake treaty.

And you killed him because of it!

Your fingerprints will be all over the evidence.

No.I didn't kill anyone! I only made the fake treaty.

Did you make it yourself?

Yes.I made it myself.I needed the money.

What about the murder?

That wasn't my idea.

So you had a partner?

Victor Chapman. He killed your uncle.

But you were there. You're both guilty.

They killed Uncle Ben and they kept his treaty for themselves.

Do you believe us now,Detective Stone?

Yes.I checked on Victor Chapman.

He has a criminal record as long as ay arm.

Where's Victor?

He left my office five minutes ago.

He was going to the post office to send the treaty to rich collector.

Where's he sending it?  South America.

South America! Detective Stone, you have to stop him...

or we'll never see the Stamford Treaty again!

BOOK 10    LESSON NINE  Why does this keep happening?
SCENE ONE: THE STUDIO
I talked to Bob Todd, the accountant, about my taxes. I don't know why I wait until the last minute every  year.
My taxes were down weeks ago.
Well, you are so smart.I'm still filling in this form. What's your advise?
My first advise is hurry up, the deadline is tomorrow.
What do you think about joint tax return form?
I don't like them. But I might make an exception. It's important to look at what kind of income your spouse has.
What do you looking at?
A mistake. You didn't add these numbers up correctly.
What do you mean?
Look back at this page. You have to fill in that number up here, then you have to substract it from the total.
Why don't you do it?
Okay. You fill in your name, your occupation, your Social Security number...Write down your income here.
Is that better to type up the form or handwrite it?
(Well), it doesn't really matter.(原文认为没有WELL,但是我肯定这里有一个,是弱读的,但是发音还是比较明显,也许是老外喜欢这么说话。) But remember run off a copy for yourself before you send it in. And if you got a problem, call me up.
Thank you, Terry. You've beem very helpful. I wish you could do my tax return every year.
That might be arranged.

SCENE TWO THE "WEEKEND UPDATE" SET
If you got a cold, you need to go to the Chemist's to buy some medicine. You Americans call that pharmacy or drugstore. And you won't want to miss going to the cinema or movie, as you call them... So please come to Great Britain, we do love to have you. I'm James Morgan on travel.
Thank you, James. I may go to London on my vocation. In the news tonight, our top story is the President's television speech on the economy. The President spoke about  major changes in the tax laws-changes that will affect every American. A WEFL/Stamford Gazette poll shows that 48% of the American people agreed with the tax changes, but 50% disagreed with the President on taxes, only 2% said they were undecided. In another news, there was a fire at the Scotto's Restaurant on Main Street. Firefighters were waiting for the smoke to clear before they look for the cause. And it's that time again. Income taxes are due tomorrow, time to fill out and send in your tax returns. We have as our guest tonight accountant, Robert Todd.
Great skies gonna clear up, put on a happy face, rush off the clouds and cheer up, put on a happy face. Take off the groomy mask of the tragedy, it's not your style. You'll look so good that you'll be glad, you decided to smile. Pick out a present outlook, stick out the noble chin. Wipe off the full of doubt look, slap on a happy grin. And spread sunshine all over the place. Just put on a happy face. Dida dida da. bang. da da da dida da...dada da da da da

SCENE THREE: ANOTHER PART OF THE STUDIO
Hi, I am on the air again.
Ops, wrong tape. What is it?
It's my singing and dancing lesson. How did that get that tape? Why does this keep happening?
And this is the end of lesson nine.

Lesson 10 Raymond Modine will be asking a lot of questions tomorrow.

SCENE ONE: THE OFFICE

Look it over and tell me what you think.
We're losing viewers.
Our owner, Peter Case, will be broken in a month, Jake.
Is the situation that bad?
It's that bad. Peter Case will have to sell the station.
There must be plenty of people out there who want to buy WEFL.
First of all, if someone else buys it, there's no guarantee that you and I will still have the jobs. And second-no

one is going to buy it, Jake... Not the price he is asking. Especially if they find that we are having techinical

difficulties.
Technical difficulties? These aren't technical difficulties. Someone is deliberately trying to hurt us.
I think so too, Jake. And I've called up a detective. His name is Raymond Modine and he'll be comeing in tomorrow.

My secretary will be handing out a letter to tell everyone at the station, explaining the situation.
Is that a good idea?
Raymond Modine will be asking a lot of questions tomorrow. You'll be here, won't you?
I'll be working at the Nature Center in the morning.
The Nature Center. That's a pretty big story. I hope we'll be able to run it.
Why shouldn't we?
Well, nothing else that we want to get on the air seems to get there. Detective Modine can see you in the afternoon,

please find some time for him.
I don't know if I will be back in time.
He'll be talking to everyone who works here. I expect you to cooperate.
Okay. But I want this solved, Steven. When I decided to stay at WEFL, I thought I was working for a solid station,

now I feel like looking for a new job.
That's your decision. I am going to do everything I can to stay here. But let me know what you're going to do.
You will be the first to know.

SCENE TWO: OUTSIDE THE STUDIO

Tonight I will be interviewing Terry. You know, he can be the one who's doing all this(这里原文是this,可我认为是

these,大家说呢?因为这件事发生了两次. 2009年1月我又重新听了一遍,用的是压码听懂的练习方法,结果发现是我自己错了,应该是this), he is an editor. He knows this equipment. And then I will be planning my interviews with Stephen

and Peter Case.
Will you be working late?
I will be working as late as I have to. And I will be waiting for you.
Why?
Won't you be staying late tonight?
No, I don't think so.
I have a lot of interviews for you to see. Will you be coming in early tomorrow?
I probably won't be coming in at all tomorrow.
Won't the Detective Modine be looking for you?
He might, but I'll be interviewing someone at the Nature Center.
Jake. I want you to look at the interviews.
I asked you for some research on the history of the Nature Center? Where is it?
I'll have it for you tomorrow.
Chris, I need the research. If you can't do it, I'll do it myself.
Thanks. I thought you were my friend. I thought you were the great journalist, the great teacher.
Yeah, well, the great journalist is going to be busy, and you'll be busy doing research on the history of the Nature

Center.
You'll have your research, Mr. Seltzer.

This is the end of lesson ten.

BOOK 10

Lesson 11 What were you doing when I was looking for the love of my life?

SCENE ONE THE PARK
Isn't this a beautiful place, Terry?
It's wonderful.
What were you doing while I was looking for the love of my life?
I was looking for you, of course.
When I was ten, I wanted to marry a handsome Englishman.
And how about now?
Now, I love a handsome Amercian. But I still don't know what I am going to do with my life.
I remember when I had to figure that out for myself, it wasn't easy.
When I was younger, I was always sure what I want to be. Now I am not so sure.
But isn't it fun trying out new directions?
Yes, sometimes it's fun, except for yesterday. I felt awful when my tape was on the air. But let's not talk about it. Let's talk about that handsome Englishman I wanted to marry.
Well. Here's your handsome Englishman. How do you do? My name is Jim Morgan.
Jim? You mean James, don't you? He hates to be called Jim.
Hello. My name is James Morgan. It's a beautiful day for a walk, don't you think?
It's a very nice day for a walk. Mr. Morgan, you look a great deal like Terry Smithers.
Smithers? Good englihs surname, but I am not sure about the forename. Terry? No, I don't like that.
Your accent is very strong, Mr. Morgen.
Yes, my grandfather was a barrister in London.
Yes, well, I bet you wish you wer still in London.
Not at all. Then I would never have met you, even though you talk funny.
You love the differences in our languages, don't you, Mr. Morgan?
It is an abosolutely fascinating subject. I used it in my new shows whenever I can. Did you know that in Britian you get on a train at a "railway station", and a one way ticket called a "single"?
Yes, we've heard all your broadcasts, James.
Yes, well. Have you got the time?
Yes, I've got the time. It's one thirty.
Enough of this. Come on, we've got to get back the station. Chris wants to interview me.
Be nice, she's a nice girl.
Yes. But I wonder her sometimes.
What are you saying?
I'm not sure, but wasn't she working alone in the editing room a lot last week?
What does that mean?
Well, nothing. Except that the problems all seem to happen in the control room or the editing room. It's got to be someone with lots of extra time.
Like Chris?
Well,Yes.
Or you.
Hey.
I am just kidding, Terry. Let's go.

SCENE TWO: THE EDITING ROOM
You'll need to post a small parcel in the letter box. Have you got any change? You'll need it for stamps.
James Morgen! I know how to mail a package in a mail box, how did you get on my shelf?
Have you got any pets, please don't bring them.
I havn't got any pets, and I'm not going on holiday because I haven't got any money. I haven't got any time, either.

This is the end of lesson eleven.
